PICTURE it if you will. You live in a small country village, perhaps somewhere on the East Fellside of Cumbria. You’ve given up the petrol driven motor. You’ve done what the Government and eco-warriors ask of you. Quite reasonably you want to do your bit for the planet. So you’ve paid over the odds and gone electric. Now where do you plug the thing in? And how much more is it costing to run, assuming you can ever get out of your village to go to work?

THE column certainly gets about a bit. A reader sends me a copy of a splendid little magazine, the Alston Moor Newsletter, in which Nobbut Laiking is quoted as providing the “quote of the quarter”. It’s taken from something I wrote back in the summer after an article in the New York Times chose to use Alston in illustrating a somewhat depressing view of rural life.
